ER Visit Rate Due to Adult Asthma
This indicator shows the age-adjusted emergency room visit rate per 10,000 population due to adult asthma ages 18-64. Asthma occurs when air passages of the lungs become inflamed and narrowed and breathing becomes difficult. Asthma is treatable, and most flare-ups and deaths can be prevented through the use of medications. Communities can potentially prevent hospitalizations by encouraging people to learn how to recognize particular warning signs of asthma attacks. Treating symptoms early can result in prevented or less severe attacks. In some cases, however, asthma symptoms are severe enough to warrant hospitalization, and can result in death. Nationwide, 15.7 million non-institutionalized adults and 6.5 million children had been diagnosed with asthma in 2005.
